How to Learn Calligraphy for Free
If you’re interested in learning calligraphy, then the internet can be your best friend. There are so many resources available for you, but it can be a little overwhelming at times. Hopefully this is something I can help with! Here are a few things you can do to learn calligraphy for free, and where to get the printables.
Learn Calligraphy: Get The Right Materials
You can’t learn calligraphy without some pens and paper. So often though, I see people spending so much money on massive sets of brush pens, only to have them collect dust, because they are too hard to use. Worse yet, they don’t know what paper is best or how to take care of these fancy pens, and they get ruined within a week. Biggest tip is: do not jump ahead. Start with resources for beginners, and then move up!
Beginners Brush Pens
Did you know that you can start with a pen that costs less than a cup of coffee? (Sounds a bit cheesy, I know.) It’s true, there are some great brush pens that are perfect for beginners that cost around $4 to $5. You can carry it around in your bag and practice anywhere. Don’t jump ahead and immediately buy a $300 or even $90 set of fancy pens (yes they can get to that price for a full set), check out this list about the best brush pens for beginners and buy a cheapie.
Another thing – you can’t use (most) brush pens on any old paper. This is where pens get ruined: people buy fancy pens, and write on whatever they find in their home printer. The pens fray, they get discouraged, and then the pens get left to collect dust. Start strong with the smoothest paper in order to lengthen the lives of your pens. Find out which paper here, and even buy it by the ream. This will save you loads of money too while you’re learning, instead of buying special smooth art diaries all the time.
